Synopsis:
At one time, up-and-coming rock singer Jude
had it all: a great band, a platinum record, a loving girlfriend. This
Christmas, however, he is well down the road towards spontaneous
self-destruction.
Unwitting at first, Jude has progressively
alienated his band and driven away the love of his life. Tonight, the
night before Christmas Eve, he has broken the final taboo during a disastrous gig. Yet Jude doesn’t see how badly his life has derailed, not until a ghostly procession of legends passes through his bedroom with a series of vivid and powerful wake-up calls.

Christmas is a
modern-day rock’n’roll adaption of Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. This novella will
enchant romance readers, rock lovers, fans of ghost stories, and everybody who
adores the festive season.

My Thoughts:
This was a cute
rewrite of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Updated to modern times, with a
rock ’n’ roll theme, this novel is a fun adventure with the Ghosts of Christmas
Past, Present and Future, otherwise known to the main character Jude as Past,
Present and Fu.
Each of these
spirits appear to Jude one night just before Christmas. At first each one
appears to be a famous, though now-dead rock legend (I have to admit, I didn’t
really recognize any of them, except maybe for the first one). Each spirit
admits to not being who they appear to be and then transform into their true
image. I thought that presenting the spirits in this manner was a delightful
way to add uniqueness to this modernized story.
Just as in the
Charles Dickens version, Jude is taken to see what his life was in the past and
present, and what his future might be like if he doesn’t change his ways. As in
the Dickens version, Jude recognized how arrogant, rude, selfish and unkind he
has been to his band members and his girlfriend.
The flow of the
novel was fast-paced and interesting. Just as this friends found him to be a
miserable so-and-so, I felt that way about him too as the story evolved. I was
glad for him at the end of the story when he realized what he had done. What a
good example for all of us to remember that we need to think more of others and
less of ourselves.
Of course, this
story has a happy ending (since the Dickens’ version did too). It was a short,
fun read that would be a nice addition to your Christmas reading list.
I gave this novella
a rating of four stars.
