Weird & Wonderful is our ninth audio book. It was inspired by a story my sister told me and I felt compelled to write something about the bugs that are perhaps less popular than others such as slugs! The score has no conventional orchestral instruments which makes this story different from the others. I decided to use some unusual instruments such as the African Kalimba, Tapped Wine Glass sounds, the Pan Mallet and some Jamaican instruments. This brought an interesting flavour to the sound of the composition. Cormac Mc Coy provided the voice of the centipede and did a great job with his song. I liked the way he sung it with an informative flare. The narrator, me, also had to sing the song at the end which I greatly enjoyed!

Twilight was too short in this world; expressing itself in a brief moment of pale-purple light that came and went in a tantalizing flash. As the lavender glow vanished, darkest night swallowed the forest in a voracious bite; making it cry out in noises far colder than those of the warm pleasant morn: sounds dreadfully opposite to the birdsong and happy chatter that filled the wood earlier in the day. The force expressing itself now was redolent of hunger, fear, and longing: growls and whimpers punctuated by the staccato of scrabbling feet; whinings and whirrings that bespoke pursuit and flight; shrill screams articulating the futile desperation that comes before a violent end.

    

The fur along Kitten’s spine rose. Such terrors were foreign to a beloved house pet. In this wild, hungry place each and every bush could conceal a lurking predatory animal; a lion, perhaps, who would think nothing of making the cat into its evening meal. In his Lady’s house, the tabby had been king of beasts; the only beast, if truth be told, aside from an occasional mouse who might cross his path and flee at the sight of the tiny tiger. Excepting his Lady’s water atomizer, Kitten had found nothing to fear in his house. These are three unique children’s stories that your young ones will enjoy.

Santa’s Chocolate Factory

Join Oliver, Jumpy and Joey on a trip to Santa’s chocolate factory. This factory is unlike Santa’s home in the North Pole and there are no elves here. See what kind of mischief Joey gets himself into.

I really liked the illustrations in this story. They were bright, clear and very attractive. The only negative thing I would say about them is that in one of the pictures I did not think one of the illustrations went with the words on the page because the Joey did not look like a kangaroo and appeared frightened rather than doing what the text said he was doing. In a second illustration I thought that Joey looked more like a wolf (with a chocolatey mouth) than a kangaroo.

I totally loved Joey’s promise at the end of the story. It’s the same kind of promise most over-indulgers make, but no true choc-a-holic can keep.

Triller

Triller is a lovely story emphasizing friendship, encouragement, caring and self-confidence. Perhaps it will help inspire your young one to try something he or she is feeling shy about.

April’s Fool

In this April fool’s tale Oliver has a trick played on him and then he, Jumpy and Joey get themselves into some serious danger. You can feel the seriousness of the danger come through in the words of the author. Like a good children’s bedtime book that won’t lead to nightmares though, there is a good ending.

All of Mr. Stejskal’s stories contain animals, fun, imagination and lots of love for children. I would highly recommend these excellent adventure stories for your younger children. I gave this book 5 stars out of 5 stars.

About the Author:

Born in Vienna, Austria, Werner is now living in the paradise of Perth, Australia with his wife, two married children and three grandchildren. He worked many years in the printing industry and later for the United Nations in Vienna. His wife had been a pen-friend, whom Werner visited in Hong Kong and finally got married to. After an eventful life, now retired, he began to write children's stories, had them illustrated through Odesk, narrated them himself for YouTube and finally published the ebooks on most platforms. Werner's dream is to see "Oliver and Jumpy" animated as a TV series.

There are lots of fairy tales and bedtime stories around and many of them quite violent. This made Werner decide to write something different. On a flight from Europe to Australia he watched the movie Magic on Belle Island with Morgan Freeman, where Freeman teaches a little girl to have imagination and write her first story. This inspired Werner as well and the first stories with his two characters Oliver, the elegant tomcat, and Jumpy, his kangaroo lady friend, made their appearance. Some very capable illustrators have helped to create this picture book series.

My Thoughts:

Based on the true story of Rapido USA's retirement and transition to a forever home, Logan's Secret is told from the point of view of Logan (Rapido USA's new name after retirement).

The book is quite short, easily read in one sitting and geared for middle-graders. The story emphasizes keeping a positive attitude and keeping your mind on your goals rather than letting yourself get bogged down by the negative.

There are several pictures in the book that appear to be sketches or pictures that have been photoshopped so they look like sketches. They add interest to the story, help to tell it and give us an emotional connection to Logan. They also show us some of the variety of coat colourings there are among greyhounds.

I liked that Logan's Secret educated us about greyhound rescue through simple storytelling. Readers learn without actually realize they are learning. For those who want to use the book as a text for learning literary skills, there is a section in the book with vocabulary to learn and questions on the story to answer. This might be helpful to classroom teachers or homeschoolers using this book.

Also at the end of the book is a chapter telling the actual story of Logan's transition from racing dog to retired racing dog. It was good to see where the author moved away from what actually happened to what she created and how she wrote the story to fill in the blanks for the portions of time where she was missing information about Logan's whereabouts. This too might be useful as a lesson in story writing.

Though the book was written for children, I found it quite engaging for adults as well. I enjoy most stories that are based on true events and this one was especially interesting because I got the opportunity to see where the story varied from the actual events.

I liked this book for its educational value about greyhound rescue and the opportunity to compare the actual true story with the fictional story. I also liked the Projects for Children section of the book. There are some interesting activities for students to do based on the book.

I think that anyone with an interest in animals, regardless of age, will appreciate this book. I gave this book 4 stars out of 5.

Her vast knowledge of this breed comes from fostering, ownership, working with lost greyhounds, and rescuing greyhounds in dire circumstances. Suzanne’s inspiration for writing Greyhound Stories is based on these experiences. Her hope is to inspire others with her stories and share the lessons she’s learned about life, love, joy, overcoming adversity, positive thinking, appreciating the simple things in life, and perhaps living a little bit more in the “now” – all through the eyes of the greyhounds that have touched her.
