Amazon Synopsis:

In The Golden Treasure, Astro and our dedicated operatives are sent to find a secret treasure which has been stolen by the evil cat, Speed Bump Charlie. So secret is the Golden Treasure that the operatives are not even told what it is. They are simply told that it will find them at a cat show, of all places!

What about the new puppy recruits? Will their special skills and enthusiasm be a match for the wicked cunning of Speed Bump Charlie? Will Commander Rocky be buried alive? And will our team return the Golden Treasure safely to its rightful home and save The Organisation?

A secret organisation exists without detection and operates right under our very noses. Its sole purpose is to save dogs from neglect. It is manned by a tunnel digging terrier who carries a diamond encrusted nail file. A large dog for which the complexities of door handles are a complete mystery and who, instead, opens everything with his head. As well as, a commando, khaki wearing Blue heeler who is armed with a hunting bone and a smell grenade. And that’s just to name a few!

 My Thoughts:

The Organisation is running a Doggy Daycare that is a cover for training new puppy recruits. Select puppies with potential for being operatives receive training under the guise of socializing and having fun.

In the meantime, Astro and the other experienced operatives are sent to rescue the Golden Treasure which has been stolen by the evil cat, Speed Bump Charlie. The treasure is so secret that all they know is that they will find Charlie and the treasure at a cat show.

This is the ultimate showdown between the cats and dogs as Speed Bump Charlie is determined to get rid of the Organisation once and for all. He figures if he can dispose of Commander Rocky then the entire Organisation will crumble. What he doesn’t count on is the ingenuity and creativity of the other operatives and recruits.

The Golden Treasure is a perfect example of the ages old fight between cats and dogs. In this particular case, you’ll probably think it’s a great book if you are a dog lover, but not so much if you are a cat lover. The dogs have interesting and funny personalities and will have kids laughing at their antics and “armpit stink bombs”. There are a few wild twists and turns in the story and while the cats have a fairly smart leader in Speed Bump Charlie it takes more than one smart cat to defeat a whole team of ingenious thinkers.

I did notice some tense errors in the book but it seemed to improve as you continued to read further into the book. I don’t think children will notice these, but as an adult and a teacher, I did.

I thought that The Golden Treasure was a fun read and quite suitable for children beginning chapter books. I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.

Thank you to the author for providing a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. A positive opinion is not required. All thoughts are my own.

About the Author:

Susan Day is passionate about children's literature and wants to inspire children to follow their dreams. She created the Astro’s Adventures series and is currently illustrating other titles for children.

Susan travelled around the world twice before she was seven years old. It was the sixties and the cheapest way to circumnavigate the globe was by cruise ship. It seemed only fitting that the wonderful events she experienced and the places she visited on these journeys be recorded for history. Thus, her story telling skills began. Firstly, to Rupert Bear, her lifelong companion, and then to a host of imaginary friends and finally to her pet dog once the family finally set down roots in Australia.

Each book Susan creates encourages and promotes the wonderful art of story-telling with organic illustrations that reach to the very essence of the reader portraying similar character traits that their pets share.

Susan shares her home with the dogs, in particular, Rocky, Stella, Alfie and Digger, three rescue guinea pigs, two bossy cats and a very patient husband.
