A not-so-little baby elephant named
Elliot hits the road to discover what there is to see away from the cool
watering hole and the shady trees where the rest of his herd likes to sit and
play checkers. He gets scared up a tree and has a host of other adventures as
he meets some great new friends along the way.
Your 3-8 year old will love to read (or be read) this charming story about a curious and thoughtful little elephant who is eager for adventure and learns the power of friendship and diversity.

Elliot’s New Friends is a lovely picture book about friendship
and diversity. Elliot is an elephant who encounters several adventures on his
trip away from home. This book is best suited for children ages 5 to 8 due to
the complexity of the sentences.
The pictures are
absolutely excellent. They are bright and colourful. They are a lot of fun to
look at and children will enjoy them.
The story is
amusing. I liked where Elliot thought the hyena was a funny-looking elephant
until he realized that he wasn’t an elephant at all, and that was okay, they
could still be friends.
This book will be
too difficult for beginning readers to read for themselves, but they will
certainly enjoy having it read to them. However, as a teacher I noticed that
the text size on each page kept changing depending on how much print the author
wanted to put on the page. Generally for younger children the print size tends
to be larger. I did notice that on one page the print size was quite a bit
smaller than all the other pages.
I also noticed that
using the Kindle for iPad app, the words were cut off at the right hand edge of
the page. As an adult with lots of practice at reading I could not always
predict the missing word. For a child developing reading skills this would
simply lead to total frustration. I am assuming the issue is the app and the
book reads correctly on a Kindle reader.
Elliot’s New Friends is a humorous and educational book that will
be enjoyed by any child who loves animals. I would recommend it to any child
and family. I rated it 4 stars out of 5.
Thank you to the
author for providing a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and honest
review. A positive opinion was not required. All thoughts are my own.
