How
does a first time author get started writing?
Believe it or not, people people come to me and say that they
want to write, but don't know where or how to start. When I’m
asked this question, I always tell them to just write. Someone once told me
that writers write. You can’t call yourself a writer
if you don’t write. This was probably the best advice I
ever got.
A
couple of pieces of advice for those wanting to get started writing. Keep a
notebook handy at all times. When
ideas pop into your head, you don’t
have to rely on your own memory. Simply pull out your notebook and write them
down. You can either jot down the topic and a short outline to follow up with
at a later time, or you can write down the complete thought. Before you know
if, you’ve written a chapter and you’re
ready to move on to the next. Some of my BEST ideas would wake me up in the
middle of the night, but I didn't want to get up and they never came back. So
whether you write it down or put it in your phone, just get it out of your
head!
I
would also suggest you join a writing group. Writing groups can be beneficial
and extremely valuable to the new author. Participating in a writing group
gives first time authors a chance to network with other authors. They will also
get the opportunity to learn different writing techniques and practices.
Writing groups can also offer critique important to new authors development.
Authors
just starting out will discover a lot about themselves during this process.
They will undoubtedly find their own voice and develop their own writing style,
but first things first. Just write!
