In A Wolf's Eyes Blog Tour and Giveaway: Author Interview with A. Katie Rose

Today on Shelf Full of Books I will be interviewing Katie Rose, author of In a Wolf's Eyes. But first, let's find out a little bit about Katie.

The Author:

A. Katie Rose is a Colorado native, and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado. She enjoys riding, teaching and learning from horses, likes camping, reading novels, watching movies and, of course,
lives to write fantasy books. She currently works as a photographer in San Antonio, Texas, and is a slave to her six cats and four horses.  “In a Wolf’s Eyes” is her first novel.

Interview

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?
I’ll have to say an event that took place almost six years ago. I rode my horse over 130 miles in one week with a local trail riding group to celebrate the start of the rodeo. As I was half-scared of my horse at the time, riding him through city streets, under highway overpasses, expecting I don’t know what – it gave me some much needed self-respect. John Wayne was reputed to have said, “Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.”

Are you jealous of other writers?
Unfortunately, yes. I won’t name names, but to see someone gain overnight success with books that I know were written badly – that bites. I work my ass off to write well, to rewrite and improve and edit and nitpick to make my book as perfect as possible. Yet, some lucky schmoe writes crap and makes millions. Damn straight I’m jealous.

Where do you find your inspiration?
Sad, but true: exercise. If I’m stuck over a scene, or have writer’s block, I go for a walk. I can usually sort it out while walking a couple miles. As my day job entails lots of walking about taking pictures, it leaves my mind free to plot. Literally. I can think about the general plot of the book as a whole, or individual scene or character issues. If I’m really on a roll, I carry a pen and some paper in my pocket and jot notes that I don’t want to forget.

What is the strangest thing you have ever had to do to promote a book? I don’t think it’s what I have done, but what I will do. Video myself reading excerpts, answering an interview like this one - only on my webcam. Create a video of myself promoting my books and sharing them on YouTube. Does Stephen King do YouTube videos? I never thought I would either. But I will. As soon as someone puts a gun to my head. Any volunteers?

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer ... which do you prefer when writing? Oh, wine, most definitely. A beer after a long hot day in the South Texas sun, then wine as I sit down to write throughout my evening. I blush to admit this, but I’ve continued writing long after I should have halted for the night – and when I reread what I wrote? I’ll admit some of it was pretty damn good and my readers will read them. I’ll never admit which parts they are, however. You’ll have to guess. Some of it, well, I reread it and think to myself “Just what the hell was I doing last night?”

Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?
Diet coke. Everyone is happy to tell me how bad it is for you, but no one wants to admit how damn good it tastes. One day I’ll kick the coke addiction, but I’ll probably just find something else just as unhealthy to fill my desperate need for a habit. Like adopting homeless cats. Oh, wait – I already have that one.

Raine is a slave, a gladiator. Known as the Bloody Wolf, he is the champion of all champions in the Empire of Khalid. Ly’Tana is a warrior princess of Kel’Halla and is set to wed the heir to Khalid’s throne, Crown Prince Broughton. When Raine and his new wizard pal, Rygel, accidentally murder the High King, they set in motion events rapidly spiraling out of control. Ly’Tana discovers the true, and violent, nature of her betrothed, a man nicknamed Prince Brutal for his vicious nature, and escapes her marriage.

But Brutal will stop at nothing to have her for his wife. To entice his runaway bride into a trap, he brings down and captures her griffin bodyguard, Bar. Ly’Tana vows to have Bar back or die trying. She seeks the help of Raine and Rygel, and frees Bar from Brutal’s clutches. Yet, in doing so, Raine and Ly’Tana are forced to flee for their lives, hunted by Brutal’s secretive assassins.

Can they escape the hunters and their silent, evil hounds? Can Ly’Tana evade Brutal’s hungry need to marry her and seize her beloved country? Can Raine keep Ly’Tana alive and still save himself from capture and torture? Can they stop themselves from falling in love?

Thus begins the first novel of The Saga of the Black Wolf series.
